John E.D. Savage


John Savage is a member of the Assessment, Taxation and Valuation Department and Employment Departments at Crease Harman & Company in Victoria. Mr. Savage has an LL. B. from the University of British Columbia, and is an active member of Canadian Bar Association.

John is a contributing co-author of the original BC Real Property Assessment Manual and sits on the CLE Editorial Board which annually updates this publication. Mr. Savage regularly presents at CLE courses on assessment matters, and has sat as an arbitrator on significant real property valuation arbitrations, including that arising from the expropriation of timber licences on South Moresby Island, and the lease renewal of a major hotel in Greater Vancouver. John has published articles in the Appraisal Institute of Canada, Appraisal Journal, and in the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia.

John also practices in the Employment Law area. He has spoken to the Victoria Chamber of Commerce on "Labour Law and Privatization", and has recently authored a paper and been a Lorman course presenter on "The Human Rights Aspects of Employee Absenteeism". Mr. Savage has also sat as an Adjudicator under the Canada Labour Code dealing with a variety of workplace issues including the contracting out of postal services, and employee dismissals in the cablevision, trucking, and airline industries.

Mr. Savage is an experienced litigator and has appeared on numerous occasions before Administrative Tribunals and the Provincial and Federal Courts in British Columbia.

Professional Associations and Activities:

John is a member of the Victoria Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and a member of the Law Society of British Columbia. He is an Editorial Board member of the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia on Assessment matters. He is member of the Canadian Bar Association section on Administrative Law.

Other Activities:

John has a history of volunteer involvement in the community. He is currently Honourary Solicitor for Scouts Canada in British Columbia, and recently was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal for his contributions to scouting in January 2003.

In the past Mr. Savage has acted as Honourary Solicitor for Lester Pearson College of the Pacific and the Canadian Red Cross Society. He is a member of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and a past Director and Executive Board Member of the Chamber.

John is currently a Director of the Island Open Golf Society and recently negotiated a contract with the Canadian Professional Golf Tour and the Golf Channel to televise the 2003 Victoria Open at the Royal Colwood Golf Course in Victoria in July, 2003.

In his spare time, if not golfing and hiking with his family, John has published articles in Golf Vancouver Island, on "Golfers Liability", his experiences in the Island Open Pro-Am in The Island Golfer, and on his experiences hiking through the Rockies in the Alpine Club of Canada, Gazette.
